Know the rules

Louisiana Rules for Moving a Mobile Home

Four Louisiana requirements shape every move. Here’s what they are and who handles each one.

Licensed installer

Under R.S. 51:912.27, it’s unlawful for anyone other than the homeowner or a licensed installer to install a manufactured home. Installers take a certification course, pass a test and carry a $25,000 bond, and a licensed installer can also transport homes. Our installers are licensed.

DOTD trip permit

Under DOTD’s truck and load regulations, a mobile home permit costs $10 per trip and covers a single trip lasting up to 72 hours, with no extensions. Permitted loads generally travel from sunrise to sunset. We get the permit and time the move.

Escorts and rush-hour limits

Homes over 12 feet wide up to 16 feet need a private escort, and wider loads need State Police. Loads over 12 feet wide are also kept off certain interstate segments from 7 to 9 AM and 3:30 to 5:30 PM, and off New Orleans streets until 6 PM.

Wind Zones II and III

Under 24 CFR 3280.305, Lafayette, Calcasieu, East Baton Rouge and 23 other parishes are in Wind Zone II. Orleans, Jefferson, Terrebonne, Lafourche, St. Mary and three more are in Wind Zone III. A home must be rated for its new parish, so we check the data plate first.

Who Does What in a Louisiana Move

In Louisiana, the wind zone check and the 72-hour permit drive the schedule. Here’s the split.

1. Check the home

Find the data plate so we can confirm the home’s wind zone rating for the new parish.

2. Local approvals

Check whether your parish or city needs a permit at the new site. We’ll confirm before move day.

3. We move the home

The DOTD trip permit, escorts and a schedule that fits the 72-hour window.

4. Licensed setup

Our licensed installers set, level and anchor the home to its wind zone.

Pricing

How Much Does It Cost to Move a Mobile Home in Louisiana?

Most of our moves cost between $2,000 and $15,000. For a Louisiana move, the price mostly depends on:

  • Home size: double- and triple-wides need more trucks and a split and rejoin.
  • Distance: across the parish costs less than Lake Charles to Shreveport, or out of state.
  • Permits and escorts: DOTD permits and private or State Police escorts for wider homes.
  • Site access: soft, wet ground, flood-prone lots and tight parks.
  • Setup scope: wind zone anchoring, blocking, leveling, utilities and skirting.
