Know the rules

Illinois Rules for Moving a Mobile Home

Four Illinois requirements shape every move. Here’s what they are and who handles each one.

County treasurer’s moving permit

Under 35 ILCS 515/11, before a mobile home subject to Illinois’s mobile home tax can be moved, the transporting company must get a permit from the county treasurer showing the taxes are paid. Moving a home more than a mile without it is a Class B misdemeanor for both the mover and the owner. We get this permit for you.

Licensed installer, state seal

Under 430 ILCS 117/25, every manufactured home must be installed under the on-site supervision of a licensed installer, who affixes a state seal to the home and files an installation certificate. The license has to be on site during the work. We hold that license.

IDOT and local road permits

Most homes travel under an IDOT oversize permit on state highways. IDOT requires permission from local authorities for county, township and city roads, so we arrange both.

Local placement permits

Many cities, villages and counties require a permit before a home is placed. Check with your local building or zoning office early. We’ll tell you what they usually ask for.

Who Does What in an Illinois Move

In Illinois, the moving company gets the treasurer’s permit, not the homeowner. Here’s the split.

1. Pay the taxes

Make sure the mobile home taxes are paid for the current period and any past periods due.

2. We get the treasurer permit

As the transporting company, we request the moving permit from the county treasurer.

3. We get the road permits

IDOT permits for state highways and local approvals for county and town roads.

4. Licensed setup and seal

We install the home, affix the state seal and file the installation certificate.

Pricing

How Much Does It Cost to Move a Mobile Home in Illinois?

Most of our moves cost between $2,000 and $15,000. For an Illinois move, the price mostly depends on:

  • Home size: double- and triple-wides need more trucks and a split and rejoin.
  • Distance: across the county costs less than Chicagoland to southern Illinois, or out of state.
  • Permits and escorts: state and local road permits, and escorts for wider homes.
  • Site access: tight parks in the suburbs, or soft farm ground downstate.
  • Setup scope: blocking, leveling, anchoring, utilities and skirting.

FAQ

Illinois Mobile Home Moving FAQs

Do I need a permit to move a mobile home in Illinois?

Yes. Before the move, the transporting company must get a permit from the county treasurer showing the mobile home taxes are paid. The move also needs road permits. We handle all of them.

Who gets the treasurer’s moving permit, me or the mover?

The mover. Illinois law puts it on the transporting company, so we request it. You just need the home’s taxes paid.

What happens if a home is moved without the permit?

Moving a mobile home more than one mile without the treasurer’s permit is a Class B misdemeanor for both the mover and the owner.

How much does it cost to move a mobile home in Illinois?

Most of our moves cost $2,000 to $15,000. The price depends on home size, distance, permits, site access and setup. Your free quote covers the whole job.

Who can install a manufactured home in Illinois?

Homes must be installed under the on-site supervision of a licensed installer, who affixes a state seal and files an installation certificate. We hold an Illinois installer license.

How long does it take to move a mobile home in Illinois?

Most single-wides move within a day once permits are ready. Double-wides usually take 1–2 days, plus setup at the new site.

Can you move my home into or out of Illinois?

Yes. We move homes between Illinois and Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky and Indiana, and across the country.

Do you move homes in winter?

Yes. Snow and ice can slow transport and site work, so we plan extra time and watch conditions before moving day.
