Michigan Rules for Moving a Mobile Home

Four Michigan requirements shape every move. Here’s what they are and who handles each one.

Licensed installer and servicer

Under Mich. Admin. Code R 125.1214i, anyone paid to install a home, or to take an installation apart, including steps, skirting and anchoring, must be licensed as an installer and servicer. Licensees complete 12 hours of approved training every license cycle. Our installers are licensed.

Transport permit and width limits

Under MCL 257.719a, a home over 102 inches wide, 12.5 feet high or 45 feet long needs a permit. Annual permits go to transport companies, dealers and manufacturers for homes up to 12 feet wide. Wider homes, up to 16 feet, need a special permit and must stay in the far-right lane.

Weekdays and daylight only

The same law bars permitted moves on Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays, from noon the day before a holiday to noon the day after, and between sunset and sunrise. Each permit names the date and time window for the move.

Wind, weather and frost laws

Homes 14 feet or wider can’t move when wind tops 25 mph, and no permitted move runs on slippery roads. Moves must also follow seasonal load restrictions, Michigan’s spring frost laws. Wide homes carry flashing amber lights and oversize signs, with escorts where state police require them.

Michigan paperwork

Who Does What in a Michigan Move

In Michigan, the permit sets the day and the route. Here’s the split.

1. Title in order

Michigan homes are titled through the Secretary of State. Buying the home? Get the title transferred first.

2. Check the new site

Confirm the community’s rules or your township’s permit for the new site.

3. We get the permit

The transport permit, a weekday daylight slot and the route.

4. Licensed setup

Our licensed installers set, level and anchor the home.

Pricing

How Much Does It Cost to Move a Mobile Home in Michigan?

Most of our moves cost between $2,000 and $15,000. For a Michigan move, the price mostly depends on:

  • Home size: double- and triple-wides need more trucks and a split and rejoin.
  • Distance: across the county costs less than Detroit to Marquette, or out of state.
  • Permits and escorts: special permits, lane rules and wind limits for wider homes.
  • Site access: snow, soft spring ground and tight rural lots.
  • Setup scope: blocking, leveling, anchoring, utilities and skirting.

FAQ

Michigan Mobile Home Moving FAQs

Do I need a permit to move a mobile home in Michigan?

Yes, if the home is over 102 inches wide, 12.5 feet high or 45 feet long, which covers nearly every mobile home. We get the transport permit as part of your move.

Can mobile homes be moved on weekends in Michigan?

No. Permitted moves can’t run on Saturdays, Sundays or legal holidays, from noon before a holiday to noon after it, or after dark. We book a weekday daylight slot.

Who can install a mobile home in Michigan?

A licensed Michigan installer and servicer. The license covers setup and taking an installation apart, including steps, skirting and anchoring, and needs 12 hours of training each cycle. Our installers are licensed.

How wide a mobile home can be moved in Michigan?

Up to 16 feet wide with a special permit, staying in the far-right lane. Homes 14 feet or wider can’t move when wind tops 25 mph.

Do frost laws affect mobile home moves in Michigan?

Yes. Moves must follow Michigan’s seasonal load restrictions, so spring moves can depend on when frost laws lift. We plan the date around them.
