Know the rules

Massachusetts Rules for Moving a Mobile Home

Four Massachusetts requirements shape every move. Here’s what they are and who handles each one.

HUD-licensed installer

Massachusetts is one of the states where HUD administers installation, so installers need a HUD manufactured home installer license under 24 CFR Part 3286. We hold that license.

MassDOT oversize permits

According to MassDOT, loads wider than the legal limit need a special permit. Permitted loads can travel on state highways from 12:01 a.m. Monday to noon Saturday, and Sunday from 12:01 a.m. to noon. We get the permit and plan the trip.

Holiday blackouts

MassDOT allows no permitted moves on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving or Christmas. For New Year’s, Independence Day and Christmas, the blackout runs from noon the day before to noon the day after. We schedule around them.

Local building officials

Under the state building code, 780 CMR 110.R3, local building officials enforce the local requirements for manufactured buildings. A modular building with a Massachusetts insignia can be relocated subject to local approval of design loads, with the insignia numbers and plans given to the building official with the permit application. We help you put that together.

Apply with your town’s building department. We’ll give you the details and documents they ask for.

3. We get the road permits

MassDOT oversize permits, timed around weekend and holiday limits.
