Know the rules

Alabama Rules for Moving a Mobile Home

Four Alabama requirements shape every move. Here’s what they are and who handles each one.

County move permit

Under Alabama Department of Revenue rule 810-4-2-.09, a manufactured home can’t move on Alabama highways without a move permit from the county office that handles manufactured home registration. It costs $10 per home, is valid 14 days and is issued only after taxes and registration are paid. Moving without one is a Class C misdemeanor. Homes entering Alabama are exempt.

Certified installer and decal

The Alabama Manufactured Housing Commission requires every manufactured home in Alabama to be installed by an AMHC certified installer, who places a state decal on the home before installation begins. Our installers are certified.

Escorts for wide homes

Under Ala. Admin. Code 450-3-1-.05, loads 12 to 14 feet wide need one escort, in front on two-lane roads and behind on multi-lane roads. Loads wider than 14 feet need escorts in front and behind on every road.

Wind Zone II on the coast

Under 24 CFR 3280.305, Mobile and Baldwin counties are in HUD’s Wind Zone II. A home placed there must be built for that zone, so we check its data plate before we quote.

Who Does What in an Alabama Move

In Alabama, the tax step comes first. Here’s the split.

1. Pay the taxes

Pay the property tax and current registration on the home at your county office.

2. Move permit

The county issues the $10 move permit once taxes are paid. We can get it as your mover.

3. We get the route permits

ALDOT oversize permits and escorts, plus a wind zone check for coastal moves.

4. Certified setup

Our AMHC certified installers set the home and place the state decal.

Pricing

How Much Does It Cost to Move a Mobile Home in Alabama?

Most of our moves cost between $2,000 and $15,000. For an Alabama move, the price mostly depends on:

  • Home size: double- and triple-wides need more trucks and a split and rejoin.
  • Distance: across the county costs less than Huntsville to Mobile, or out of state.
  • Permits and escorts: the county move permit, ALDOT permits and escorts for wider homes.
  • Site access: hills up north, soft ground on the coast and tight parks.
  • Setup scope: blocking, leveling, anchoring, utilities and skirting.

FAQ

Alabama Mobile Home Moving FAQs

Do I need a permit to move a mobile home in Alabama?

Yes. A manufactured home needs a county move permit before it travels on Alabama highways, and wider homes need ALDOT oversize permits. We get them.

How much is a mobile home move permit in Alabama?

The state rule sets it at $10 per home, valid 14 days. The county issues it after property taxes and registration are paid. Some counties add an issuance fee.

What happens if a mobile home is moved without a permit?

It’s a Class C misdemeanor in Alabama, with a fine of at least $50, and any Alabama officer can issue the citation.

Who can install a manufactured home in Alabama?

Only an installer certified by the Alabama Manufactured Housing Commission, who places a state decal on each home before installation. Our installers are AMHC certified.

Do you move mobile homes in Birmingham and Montgomery?

Yes. We move manufactured homes around Birmingham, Montgomery, Pell City, Tuscaloosa and Opelika, and in every county in Alabama.

How much does it cost to move a mobile home in Alabama?

Most of our moves cost $2,000 to $15,000. The price depends on home size, distance, permits and escorts, site access and how much setup you need. Your quote is free.

Do coastal Alabama homes need a special wind rating?

Yes. Mobile and Baldwin counties are in HUD Wind Zone II, so a home placed there must be built for that zone. We check the data plate before we quote.

Can you move my home into or out of Alabama?

Yes. We move homes between Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida and beyond, and we get the permits for every state on the route.
