Know the rules

North Carolina Rules for Moving a Mobile Home

Four North Carolina requirements shape every move. Here’s what they are and who handles each one.

County tax moving permit

Under G.S. 105-316.1 and 105-316.2, a mobile home can’t be moved without a permit from the county tax collector, issued once the taxes due are paid. Manufacturers, retailers and licensed carriers don’t have to get it themselves, but the permit, when required, must be displayed near the license tag on the rear of the home during transport.

Licensed set-up contractor

Under G.S. 143-143.10, the NC Manufactured Housing Board licenses set-up contractors and can require them to post a bond. We hold that license.

NCDOT oversize permits

Under the NCDOT oversize permit handbook, 16 feet is the widest a home can be permitted. 12- to 14-foot homes travel sunrise to sunset, 16-foot homes only 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and loads over 12 feet wide stay out of the Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill areas during rush hours. We plan the timing.

Weather limits

The same handbook stops moves when visibility is under 500 feet or roads have snow or ice, and bars homes wider than 10 feet when wind gusts top 25 mph. We watch the forecast and keep a backup day.

Pricing

How Much Does It Cost to Move a Mobile Home in North Carolina?

Most of our moves cost between $2,000 and $15,000. For a North Carolina move, the price mostly depends on:

  • Home size: double- and triple-wides need more trucks and a split and rejoin.
  • Distance: across the county costs less than Asheville to the coast, or out of state.
  • Permits and escorts: NCDOT and local permits, and escorts for wider homes.
  • Site access: tight parks around the cities, sandy coastal lots, or mountain roads out west.
  • Setup scope: blocking, leveling, anchoring, utilities and skirting.

FAQ

North Carolina Mobile Home Moving FAQs

Do I need a permit to move a mobile home in North Carolina?

North Carolina requires a moving permit from the county tax collector, issued once the taxes due are paid, though manufacturers, retailers and licensed carriers don’t have to obtain it themselves. The home also travels under an NCDOT oversize permit, which we handle.

Who can set up a manufactured home in North Carolina?

Set-up contractors are licensed by the North Carolina Manufactured Housing Board, which can require a bond. Our crew holds that license.

When can mobile homes be moved on North Carolina roads?

12- to 14-foot homes travel sunrise to sunset. 16-foot homes can only move between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Loads over 12 feet wide can’t travel near Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham or Chapel Hill from 7 to 9 a.m. or 4 to 6 p.m.

How much does it cost to move a mobile home in North Carolina?

Most of our moves cost $2,000 to $15,000. The price depends on home size, distance, permits and escorts, site access and how much setup you need. Your quote is free.

Do you move mobile homes in Fayetteville and New Bern?

Yes. We move homes around Fayetteville and the Sandhills, New Bern and the coast, and everywhere else in North Carolina.

Can a mobile home be moved in bad weather?

Not in snow or ice, or when visibility is under 500 feet. Homes wider than 10 feet can’t move when wind gusts top 25 mph, so we keep a backup day in the plan.

I bought a used mobile home in North Carolina. Can you move it?

Yes. We’ll check the home, quote the move and set it up at your site. Make sure the taxes are paid so the moving permit isn’t held up.

Can you move my home into or out of North Carolina?

Yes. We move homes between North Carolina and Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and beyond, and we get the permits for every state on the route.
