Know the rules

Florida Rules for Moving a Mobile Home in Tampa

Four Florida requirements shape every move. Here’s what they are and who handles each one.

Licensed installer and decal

Under Fla. Stat. § 320.8249, anyone who installs a mobile home in Florida needs a state installer license, and a state installation decal goes on the home before installation, next to the HUD label. Unlicensed installation is a first-degree misdemeanor. Our installers are licensed.

Escorts by width

Under FDOT Rule 14-26.012, homes over 12 to 14 feet wide need at least one escort and four warning lights at the corners. Homes over 14 to 16 feet need two escorts, one in front and one behind, and move on single-trip permits only.

Daylight, no weekends

The same rule keeps loads over 10 feet wide to daytime travel, and unless the permit says otherwise, oversize moves are prohibited on weekends and holidays. Moves through congested areas avoid peak hours.

Wind Zones II and III

Under 24 CFR 3280.305, Pinellas, Manatee and Sarasota counties are in HUD’s Wind Zone III, and Hillsborough, Pasco and Polk are in Wind Zone II. A home must be rated for its new county, so we check the data plate before we quote.

Who Does What in a Tampa Move

In Tampa Bay, the wind zone check comes first. Here’s the split.

1. Check the home

Find the data plate so we can confirm the home’s wind zone rating for the new county.

2. Local approvals

Check whether your city, county or park needs a permit at the new site. We’ll confirm before move day.

3. We get the permits

FDOT oversize permits and escorts, with a weekday, daylight move.

4. Licensed setup

Our licensed installers set and anchor the home and place the state decal.

FAQ

Tampa Mobile Home Moving FAQs

Do I need a permit to move a mobile home in Florida?

Yes. Homes wider than legal limits need an FDOT oversize permit, with escorts and lights depending on width. We get it.

Can mobile homes move on weekends in Florida?

Not usually. Unless the permit says otherwise, oversize moves are prohibited on weekends and holidays, and homes over 10 feet wide travel in daylight only.

When does a mobile home need an escort in Florida?

Homes over 12 to 14 feet wide need at least one escort and four corner warning lights. Homes over 14 to 16 feet need two escorts, front and rear.

Who can install a mobile home in Florida?

A state-licensed mobile home installer, or a direct employee working under one. A state installation decal goes on each home. Our installers are licensed.

What wind zone is Tampa in?

Hillsborough, Pasco and Polk counties are in HUD Wind Zone II. Pinellas, Manatee and Sarasota are in Wind Zone III, so a home moving there must be rated for Zone III.
