Connecticut Rules for Moving a Mobile Home
Four Connecticut requirements shape every move. Here’s what they are and who handles each one.
CTDOT oversize permit
Under C.G.S. § 14-270, the Department of Transportation issues the permits for oversize loads, including manufactured homes. CTDOT caps mobile, modular and sectional housing at 16 feet wide. Permits can set routes, travel days and hours. We get the permit.
Escorts for wide homes
The same law requires a civilian escort ahead of loads 12 to 13.5 feet wide on undivided highways. A state legislative research report notes CTDOT generally requires two State Police escorts for loads wider than 13.5 feet. We book them.
HUD licensed installer
Connecticut uses HUD’s installation program. Under 24 CFR 3286, the first installation of a new home must be done or supervised by a HUD licensed installer, who certifies the work. Our installers hold that license.
Used homes and town approvals
HUD’s program covers a new home’s first installation. For a used home, the town’s building and zoning officials set the requirements, so we check with them before we quote.

Who Does What in a Connecticut Move
In Connecticut, the transport permit and escorts are the big steps. Here’s the split.
1. Confirm the site
Make sure the park or town allows the home. We’ll check size and access.
2. Town approvals
We confirm what the town’s building and zoning officials need at the new site.
3. We get the permit
The CTDOT oversize permit for the route, plus civilian or State Police escorts.
4. Licensed setup
Our HUD licensed installers set the home and certify the installation.

Pricing
How Much Does It Cost to Move a Mobile Home in Connecticut?
Most of our moves cost between $2,000 and $15,000. For a Connecticut move, the price mostly depends on:
- Home size: double- and triple-wides need more trucks and a split and rejoin.
- Distance: across town costs less than Fairfield County to the Quiet Corner, or out of state.
- Permits and escorts: the CTDOT permit, plus civilian or State Police escorts for wider homes.
- Site access: narrow town roads, tight parks and winter conditions.
- Setup scope: blocking, leveling, anchoring, utilities and skirting.

FAQ
Connecticut Mobile Home Moving FAQs

When does a mobile home need an escort in Connecticut?

CTDOT’s limit for mobile, modular and sectional housing is 16 feet wide.
