Know the rules

Rhode Island Rules for Moving a Mobile Home

Four Rhode Island requirements shape every move. Here’s what they are and who handles each one.

RIDOT permit, weekdays only

Under RIDOT’s oversize rule, 290-RICR-40-00-1.5, permitted loads travel Monday through Friday only, from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. We get the permit and plan around those hours.

Escorts for wide homes

The same rule requires one escort for loads 12 feet to 14 feet 6 inches wide, and two escorts for anything wider. We book them.

Interstate time windows

Mobile or modular homes over 12 feet wide on I-195, or on I-95 from the Massachusetts line to Route 37, may only travel between sunrise and 7:00 AM or between 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM. That keeps them out of rush hour.

HUD licensed installer

Rhode Island uses HUD’s installation program. Under 24 CFR 3286, a new home’s first installation must be done or supervised by a HUD licensed installer, who certifies the work. Our installers hold that license. For used homes, we check the town’s requirements before we quote.

Who Does What in a Rhode Island Move

In Rhode Island, the RIDOT permit and the travel window are the big steps. Here’s the split.

1. Confirm the site

Make sure the park or town allows the home. We’ll check size and access.

2. Town approvals

We confirm what the town’s building and zoning officials need at the new site.

3. We get the permit

The RIDOT oversize permit, escorts and a travel time that fits the rules.

4. Licensed setup

Our HUD licensed installers set the home and certify the installation.

Pricing

How Much Does It Cost to Move a Mobile Home in Rhode Island?

Most of our moves cost between $2,000 and $15,000. For a Rhode Island move, the price mostly depends on:

  • Home size: double- and triple-wides need more trucks and a split and rejoin.

  • Permits and escorts: the RIDOT permit, escorts and travel windows for wider homes.
  • Site access: narrow streets, tight parks and coastal lots.
