Know the rules

Vermont Rules for Moving a Mobile Home

Four Vermont requirements shape every move. Here’s what they are and who handles each one.

Endorsed bill of sale

Under 9 V.S.A. § 2602, a mobile home can’t be hauled over Vermont highways unless the driver carries a copy of the uniform bill of sale endorsed by the town clerk. The clerk endorses it only once the taxes on the home are paid, and the rule also applies when an owner moves a home to another town.

Relocation statement

Under 9 V.S.A. § 2606, within 10 days of a move inside Vermont, the owner files a relocation statement with the town clerk and gives a copy to any lienholders. A home can’t be moved out of state unless all lienholders consent in writing.

HUD-licensed installer

Vermont is one of the states where HUD administers installation, so installers need a HUD manufactured home installer license under 24 CFR Part 3286. We hold that license.

DMV single-trip permits

Under Vermont’s oversize permit rules, mobile and modular homes wider than 8 feet 6 inches move on a single-trip permit. Loads 12 feet wide or more need an escort and generally can’t get permits for weekends or holidays, and wide loads stop for ice, snow or poor visibility. We arrange the permit and escort.

Vermont paperwork

Who Does What in a Vermont Move

In Vermont, the bill of sale is the key document. Here’s the split.

1. Pay the taxes

Pay the property taxes on the home so the town clerk can endorse the bill of sale.

2. Endorsed bill of sale

Get the bill of sale endorsed by the clerk in the town where the home sits, and give us a copy to carry.

3. We get the road permits

DMV single-trip permits, escorts and the right travel window.

4. Setup and relocation statement

We install the home. You file the relocation statement with the town clerk within 10 days.
