Know the rules

North Dakota Rules for Moving a Mobile Home

Four North Dakota requirements shape every move. Here’s what they are and who handles each one.

County moving permit

Under N.D.C.C. § 57-55-11, a mobile home can’t leave its location without a moving permit from the county director of tax equalization showing all taxes, penalties and interest are paid. The permit is displayed on the rear of the home during the move. Moving without one carries a $100 to $500 fine.

Licensed installer and inspection

Under North Dakota’s installation program, new manufactured homes must be installed by a state-licensed installer and inspected by a state-licensed inspector, at least once for a single-wide and twice for a double-wide. An insignia goes on the home once it passes. Our installers are licensed.

Highway Patrol permit and escorts

Under the Highway Patrol’s manufactured housing permit policy, homes wider than 18 feet can’t be permitted on state highways. Homes over 16 feet need a pilot car in front and behind on two-lane roads, or one behind on four-lane divided highways. The county’s orange moving permit is needed to get the oversize permit.

Travel times and weather

Oversize moves stop from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise, except loads 12 feet wide or less. Homes over 16 feet can’t move Saturday after noon, Sundays or listed holidays. No moves in wind over 25 mph, slick roads or visibility of half a mile or less.
