Know the rules

South Dakota Rules for Moving a Mobile Home

Four South Dakota requirements shape every move. Here’s what they are and who handles each one.

County treasurer’s moving permit

According to the South Dakota Department of Revenue, anyone who moves a mobile or manufactured home needs a permit from the county treasurer where the home sits. It covers one trip, and the treasurer first confirms the current year’s taxes are paid. Moving without it can bring a penalty for the owner, dealer or transporter.

HUD-licensed installer

South Dakota is one of the states where HUD administers installation, so installers need a HUD manufactured home installer license under 24 CFR Part 3286. We hold that license.

Highway Patrol oversize permits

Homes travel under a South Dakota oversize permit. An extended-period permit covers homes up to 16 feet wide, and larger homes need a single-trip permit. Homes can’t be moved when winds are over 25 miles per hour. We arrange the permits and watch the weather.

Local placement permits

Many cities and counties require a permit before a home is placed. Check with your local building or zoning office early. We’ll tell you what they usually ask for.

Who Does What in a South Dakota Move

In South Dakota, the move starts at the county treasurer’s office. Here’s the split.

1. Pay the taxes

Make sure the current year’s taxes on the home are paid.

2. Treasurer’s permit

Get the moving permit from the treasurer in the county where the home is now.

3. We get the road permits

Highway Patrol oversize permits and any local approvals for the route.

4. Licensed setup

Our HUD-licensed installer sets the home and certifies the installation.

FAQ

South Dakota Mobile Home Moving FAQs

Do I need a permit to move a mobile home in South Dakota?

Yes. Every move needs a permit from the county treasurer where the home is located, and the treasurer first confirms the current year’s taxes are paid. The home also travels under a state oversize permit, which we handle.

What happens if a home is moved without the treasurer’s permit?

The South Dakota Department of Revenue can assess a penalty on the owner, dealer or transporter. Get the permit before moving day.

Who can install a manufactured home in South Dakota?

South Dakota is a HUD-administered installation state, so installers need a HUD manufactured home installer license. Our crew holds that license.

Can a mobile home be moved on a windy day?

Not when winds are over 25 miles per hour. South Dakota is windy, so we watch the forecast and keep a backup day in the plan.

How much does it cost to move a mobile home in South Dakota?

Most of our moves cost $2,000 to $15,000. The price depends on home size, distance, permits and escorts, site access and how much setup you need. Your quote is free.

Do you move mobile homes in Sioux Falls?

Yes. We move homes in and around Sioux Falls, Brandon, Harrisburg and Tea, and from Sioux Falls to anywhere in South Dakota or out of state.

How long does it take to move a mobile home in South Dakota?

Most single-wides move within a day once permits are ready and the weather cooperates. Double-wides take longer because the sections are split, moved and rejoined. Setup usually adds a few days.

Can you move my home into or out of South Dakota?

Yes. We move homes between South Dakota and North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana and beyond. Leaving South Dakota starts with the county treasurer’s permit, and we get the permits for every state on the route.
