Know the rules

Maine Rules for Moving a Mobile Home

Four Maine requirements shape every move. Here’s what they are and who handles each one.

Licensed installer

The Maine Manufactured Housing Board’s licensing rules set the requirements for installers, mechanics, dealers and manufacturers of manufactured housing. We hold a Board installer license.

Tax certificate from the town

Under 29-A MRSA § 1002, a mobile home can’t be moved over a public way unless the operator carries a movement permit or a written certificate from the town tax collector showing all property taxes, including the current year’s, are paid. Moving a home in violation is a traffic infraction.

BMV movement permits

Under the BMV’s mobile and modular home rules, a previously used home needs a current tax release (MV-47 or MV-47E) from its town of origin before a permit is issued, and must carry a dealer or transit plate. Homes 11'6" wide or more need a heavy-duty tow truck, warning flags, lights and safety chains. Our equipment meets them.

Travel limits by width

The same rules ban wide homes from moving at night, on Sundays and on legal holidays, and from Saturday afternoons from late April to mid-November. Homes over 13'6" also can’t move Friday afternoons, and homes over 14'6" need pilot vehicles and can’t move on Fridays at all. We schedule around every limit.

FAQ

Bangor and Maine Mobile Home Moving FAQs

Do you move mobile homes in Bangor?

Yes. We move homes in and around Bangor, Brewer, Hampden, Orono and Old Town, and from Bangor to anywhere in Maine or out of state.

What do I need before moving a mobile home in Maine?

A used home needs a current tax release (MV-47 or MV-47E) from its town of origin before the BMV issues a permit. Taxes for the current year must be paid. We handle the BMV permit.

Who can install a manufactured home in Maine?

Installers are licensed by the Maine Manufactured Housing Board. Our crew holds that license.

When can mobile homes be moved on Maine roads?

Wide homes don’t move at night, on Sundays, on legal holidays or, from late April to mid-November, on Saturday afternoons. Wider homes have extra Friday limits, and the widest need pilot vehicles.

How much does it cost to move a mobile home in Maine?

Most of our moves cost $2,000 to $15,000. The price depends on home size, distance, permits and pilot vehicles, site access and how much setup you need. Your quote is free.

I bought a used mobile home in Maine. Can you move it?

Yes. Make sure the seller’s town issues the tax release first. We’ll check the home, quote the move and set it up at your site.

How long does it take to move a mobile home in Maine?

Most single-wides move within a day once the tax release and permit are ready. Double-wides, long hauls and winter weather take longer. Setup usually adds a few days.

Can you move my home into or out of Maine?

Yes. We move homes between Maine and New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and beyond, and we get the permits for every state on the route.
